Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get the scores?

All of our scores are based on the scores given to the restaurant by local health inspectors.

How often is each restaurant inspected?

Local health inspectors inspect each restaurant 2-3 times per year on average.

How come I couldn't find the restaurant I was looking for?

Since all our scores are based on local health inspection scores in cases where a restaurant hasn't been inspected no score will appear. This may happen if the restaurant is new and wasn't inspected yet, a restaurant has changed its name or a restaurant is on federal property (not in the jurisdiction of the local county). In any case please let us know if you couldn't find the restaurant you were looking for (Contact Us). We promise to look into it and get back to you.

How do health inspectors calculate their scores?

See our page about Scoring.

What is the most severe food violation?

According to studies conducted by the US Food and Drug administration the most dangerous food violation is improper handling of meat. Raw meat needs to be kept below 41° F.
