About CleanScores

Have you ever wondered what is happening in a restaurant kitchen? As restaurant customers we tend to assume that a clean dining area implies a clean kitchen. But unfortunately this is often not the case. Hygiene inspections performed by regional health departments throughout the US consistently show that restaurant kitchens often violate numerous safe practices, many of which can directly cause foodborne illness.

The CDC has estimated that there are more than 76 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States each year. Health department inspections are a vital aspect of our governments’ attempts to encourage safe restaurants. But consumers rarely see the results of these inspections. If they did, not only would it help customers identify clean restaurants, but it would create an incentive for restaurants to maintain high hygiene standards.

CleanScores goal is to substantially reduce the number of food-related illnesses. By making hygiene inspection results easily accessible to the public, we hope more and more consumers will take this information into account when deciding on a restaurant, creating an incentive for restaurant owners to keep their kitchens clean.
